COLLEGE SPORTS · RECRUITING PLAN
Plan your college sports recruiting with a practical shortlist, a coach-question checklist and a free worksheet. Keep academic admission, playing eligibility, team selection and costs clear as you compare US colleges.
Make your next sporting conversation easier to start.
01A CLEARER WAY FORWARD
Research US college sport through NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA institutions using this plan. Other countries have their own processes. A recruiting profile supports your introduction; it does not replace an application or eligibility review.
Compare courses, sporting fit, location and costs before sending enquiries.
Separate coaching conversations from admissions, eligibility and financial-aid decisions.
Record confirmed answers, unanswered questions and the next deadline in one worksheet.
Record your entry term, intended subject, sport, position or event, competition level and budget. Add location preferences and support needs. Separate essentials from preferences. Would you still want to study there if your sporting circumstances changed?
Ask a coach who knows your current performance to help assess a realistic range of programmes. Use recent evidence: timed results, competition context, match footage or comparable performances. Treat this as a starting point for research, not a prediction of selection.
First, find institutions with your subject and sport. Verify the programme on the college’s own academic and athletics websites. Record its association and division for that sport, the current coaching staff and the official recruitment questionnaire or contact route.
Second, compare academic entry requirements, course structure, published costs and location. Third, look at recent schedules, results and roster experience to prepare informed questions. A roster does not establish an available place. Start with a manageable group, such as five colleges, and expand after learning what fits. Mark each fact “confirmed”, “needs checking” or “not suitable”, with its source and date.
Shortlist row — repeat for each college College / subject / entry term: [ ] Sport / association / division: [ ] Academic fit and official source: [ ] Sporting evidence and question for coach: [ ] Cost and funding still to confirm: [ ] Next action / responsible person / date: [ ]
Track academic admission, athletics eligibility, team selection and funding as separate decisions. A positive coaching conversation does not settle the other three. Ask admissions about the course application; ask the athletics compliance or eligibility staff which certification steps apply; ask the coach about selection; ask the financial-aid office for your written funding details.
For NCAA options, use the Eligibility Center’s current account and document guidance. For NAIA options, use PlayNAIA and the relevant student guidance. For an NJCAA college, ask its athletics staff to identify the current eligibility process for your circumstances. Avoid applying one association’s instructions to another.
Use your name, sport, position or event, graduation or expected entry year, current team and competition level. Explain one specific reason the college interests you academically and athletically. Include a working profile or video link and one clear question. Complete the institution’s questionnaire when requested.
Label footage with the date, opposition or competition and a way to identify you. Check access from a signed-out browser. Keep transcripts and identity documents in the institution’s verified private submission process. NCAA communication rules differ by sport, division and stage of schooling; use current official guidance rather than assuming every coach can respond on the same timetable.
Ask about the next decision. Take notes and confirm important details before making commitments.
Coach conversation checklist [ ] Are you considering athletes in my position/event and entry year? [ ] What evidence would help you assess me? [ ] What are the next steps and their expected timing? [ ] How are roster selection and playing opportunities decided? [ ] What does a normal training, travel and study week involve? [ ] Who handles admissions, eligibility and funding questions? [ ] Which costs, conditions and renewal terms should I confirm in writing?
Tell the relevant offices where you studied, the qualification you are completing, your expected graduation date and any previous college attendance. For NCAA academic review, consult the guidance for your educational system, which may differ from the country where your school is located. Check who must send records and which translations are required.
NAIA’s international guidance describes PlayNAIA registration and InCred credential evaluation. Follow its current instructions rather than reusing another association’s document checklist. Ask the college’s international student office about its own application and arrival process. This worksheet records questions; it does not determine academic, sporting or immigration eligibility.
Record the contact date, response, documents requested, confirmed deadlines and next action. Follow the programme’s stated process. When comparing costs, include tuition, accommodation, meals, travel and other required charges; distinguish published estimates from your own written offer. Keep unresolved funding visible in the plan.
Update your shortlist as you receive evidence. Keep a current sports CV and profile, including CREZA if useful, but continue through each institution’s official route. A message, profile view or scholarship discussion is progress to record, not confirmation of admission or a roster place.
